Mendocino
Rally 2012

The 2012 Mendocino Rally is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 3rd and 4th, in Ukiah California

Trophies were presented to both driver and co-driver in California Rally Series classes, plus three special awards. A “Most Improved” award to Kevin Kardos and Corey Salsbery, a “North-South Challenge” award (won by the South) and a “Fastest Fun Run” award. Since no team took a fun run, the award was given to Pat and Denise McMahon.  As the fast sweep car, they suffered a flat tire on the first leg. They continued on the flat to close the stage, drove into Lakeport to get a new tire, and then returned to complete their sweep car duties!

The focus of the Mendocino Rally is “simple, fun, and low cost”

The Mendocino Red Tail Rally was sanctioned by Rally America as a coefficient 2 regional event. The rally featured over 40 stage miles of soft, twisty dirt roads, and less than 40 miles of transits. The frequent turns in the highly technical course keep both drivers and co-drivers very busy.

The 2011 Mendocino Rally was held in the South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area, with the start and finish in Ukiah California. The freshly graded roads of South Cow Mountain were smooth and flowing, with lots of turns, very few straights, and no significant rocks, ruts or water bars, and lots of dust.  About half the roads were wide enough to allow easy passing or, better yet, a choice of approaches into the next turn.  There were a few double cautions, but no triples.

A successful rally needs two things, great roads and volunteer workers.  Developing a robust local worker base was critical not only to the success of the 2011 Mendocino Red Tail Rally, but also to the future of performance rallies in Northern California.  Three types of volunteers were needed, experienced amateur radio operators, experienced rally workers, and new rally workers eager to learn.  Local radio and car clubs made the Mendocino Red Tail Rally an official club activity, and experienced rally workers from Southern California came up to captain the various worker teams. Over 100 volunteer workers receive a Mendocino Red Tail Rally tee shirt, a barbecue dinner, one of the best spectator seats in motor sports, and a chance to be part of Northern California rally history.
